A perfect transatlantic fit

In March 2023, the acquisition of the Canadian stretch film producer Malpack was finalised, marking a major milestone for both companies in different ways. Trioworld entered the North American market and Malpack could now leverage the know-how and expertise of the leading European producer of high-quality plastic packaging solutions with PCR content.

“Trioworld and Malpack are a perfect fit. We share the same core values and ambition to
transform the market and lead the transition from a linear model to a circular economy for plastics. We have previously tried to introduce PCR content in our stretch film but have stalled due to low customer interest. Now we have the strength to generate demand by educating and sharing best practices, enabling customers to be one step ahead as sustainability is increasingly being incorporated into their business strategies,” says
Ricardo Cardoso, CEO Malpack and VP North America division, Trioworld Group. “Upcoming legislation addressing recyclability, as well as increased amounts of recycled content, will also be a major driving force in Canada.”

A strong market position in Canada and the US

Malpack is a leading producer and supplier of premium load security solutions based on highperformance stretch film to customers within distribution, beverage, food, consumer goods, e-commerce, and other industrial packaging. The company has a strong market position in North America with a turnover of 240 MEUR and a total of +260 employees. Head office and production is in Ajax, Ontario, Canada, with distribution centers located across North America.

"We are already seeing the immense value created for our customers, as well as an acceleration of product development, and sustainability-driven initiatives to move the market and support the transition into a circular future."

Ricardo Cardoso,
President of Trioworld North America and CEO at Malpack

Ricardo Cardoso sees the need to both educate brand owners as well as challenge them in
order to generate demand for more sustainable alternatives. “We need to challenge what they know and address the need for recyclability and carbon footprint reduction. The North American market is different from the European market, but we are only a few steps behind. We are starting to see interest in recycled content accelerate and sustainability has become a “hot topic”. Nonetheless, the commercial aspect is still very strong, and it is a tricky sales pitch; but we have a strong product offering, plus the expertise and know-how to stay competitive.”

Major investments and plans for expansion

With first-hand insights into the European market in regard to increased focus on sustainability targets, upcoming legislation and consumer demand, Ricardo Cardoso is confident that demand will continue to build. Since March 2023, major investments in production capacity have been made along with extensive plans to ship high quality PCR from Europe to further strengthen the Loop product offering and include it into the Malpack product portfolio.

“We can now offer both hand stretch film as well as machine stretch film with 30% PCR - VMAXX Loop and Axis Loop”, says Ricardo Cardoso. “We are experts in downgauging and optimizing wrap patterns in our stretch film to reduce the material used and now we can also offer recycled content in our products. Our next step is to introduce bale wrap and move into the agricultural segment as well as increase our industrial portfolio with stretch hoods.”

The “perfect fit” enables the sharing of extensive experiences, innovations, and best practices between two leading producers of highperformance plastic film operating on each side of the Atlantic.
