PRESS RELEASE
In a major step toward circular packaging, Trioworld together with partners is developing machine stretch film with up to 50% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content. A scalable high-performance solution designed to prepare retailers and brand owners comply with upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) targets.
On July 1st, Trioworld Apeldoorn welcomed partners, industry stakeholders, and interested companies to a dedicated site visit and knowledge exchange event. The occasion offered a deep dive into the SKILLS project – a pioneering Dutch collaboration focused on closing the Chain for Industrial LLDPE Stretch Films. The development of the load security stretch film is the result of close collaboration within the SKILLS consortium – comprising Trioworld, Grolsch, Broeckx Plastic Recycling, and NTCP – and was developed as part of the Circular Plastics NL program, with support from the Dutch National Growth Fund.
“Load security machine stretch film is a high-end application, and the perception is often that using recycled content won’t work. Together with our partners in the chain, we’re proving that it can be done. We are all innovation leaders in our fields and share a strong belief in this project,” says Jolien Stevels, Director of Research & Development.
“Thanks to the technology and expertise of partners like Broeckx Recycling and NTCP—and the in-house capacity of Trioworld’s new production line—we’re working on delivering stretch film with up to 50% PCR content, in a way that is both technically and commercially scalable.”
The new stretch film is already in practice by partners including Royal Grolsch, where it is used for wrapping pallets with cans of beer. “As a brewery committed to sustainable packaging, we are excited to be part of this transition from 30% up to 50% recycled content,” says, Susan Ladrak, Sustainability Manager at Grolsch. “This solution helps us to take concrete steps toward meeting our circularity goals, while safeguarding logistic performance.”
The new production line at the Trioworld site in Apeldoorn is a direct outcome of SKILLS (Sluiten Keten Industriële LLDPE Stretchfilms) – a national demonstration project that focuses on closing the loop for stretch film made with Post-Consumer Recycled plastics. Through SKILLS, the consortium is not only developing and testing PCR stretch film, but also validating the entire chain – from sorting, washing, and regranulating to film production and reuse in operational settings.
“SKILLS demonstrates what’s possible, turning waste into high-quality film with full chain control. We need more initiatives like this to accelerate the circular economy”, said Bas Salzmann of the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth.
