Our most important carrier bag
It was the joint efforts of 25 ICA grocery stores in Värmland, Sweden and their customers, in collaboration with Trioworld, that made this contribution to the foundation possible.
A true circular economy – Trioworld focuses on recycled material
Headquartered in the Nordic region of Europe, Trioworld originates from a region with very strong and well developed structures for effective recycling of various materials. There´s a strong culture of recycling in Sweden and neighboring countries, where most people sort their waste and recycle metal packaging, plastic packaging and glass bottles.
At Trioworld, we work actively to reduce our impact on the environment. One of the best examples of our relentless focus is the Climate Smart Carrier Bag, made of up to 80% recycled plastics.
Littering is a major problem in many countriesThe world’s growth areas especially, such as China and South America, have problems with excessive littering. But even parts of Europe, primarily southern and eastern Europe, show the same issues. Plastic carrier bags comprise a certain portion of the waste. The high consumption is explained by the use of thin, poor-quality plastic bags, which results in higher use because they break easily. Furthermore, plastic bags and other garbage are deposited in large landfills. Erosion in the landfills brings the plastic bags to the surface and among other things, they can be blown out to sea, where they contribute to marine littering. As a result of littering and the high consumption of plastic bags, in 2015 the EU put its foot down and set requirements for its member countries. The requirement was a reduction in the use of plastic carrier bags from 90 to 40 bags per person and year in Europe by 2025.
However, it is important to understand that we do not have the same littering issues here in the Nordic region. Our bags are better and more durable than the bags in southern Europe, and after using them for purchases – often more than once – we use them as garbage bags. We recycle the bags that we do not use as garbage bags at recycling stations. What is a truly Nordic challenge is how we can reduce the environmental burden of our bags in the form of a reduced carbon footprint. This is where our climate-smart carrier bags in recycled material come in to play. By using up to 80% recycled material, we are drastically reducing our environmental impact.
A strong recycling culture in Trioworld– and growingThe Climate Smart Carrier Bag is only one example of how Trioworld continuously incorporate more and more recycled material into the product range. Other product areas are well underway. In total, out of a total volume of around 200 000 tons processed material, more than 25% is made of recycled material.
