Material recycling is key in reaching net zero emissions by 2050

Today, too much plastic waste ends up in incineration or landfill in the EU instead of being recycled back into new products. According to the latest statistics, 35% of post-consumer plastic waste went to recycling, 42% to energy recovery and 23% to landfill in 2020*. High-quality recycling of plastics is an important contributor to our climate goals both at the EU level, within member states and for companies. Together with our customers, we at Trioworld can increase the amount of plastic waste going to recycling.

The goal for the EU is to be climate neutral by 2050 to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The transition to a climate-neutral society, with net zero emissions of greenhouse gases, is both an urgent challenge and an opportunity to build a better future. The strategy to reach this objective is called the European Green Deal and one essential aspect is the new circular economy action plan. A new regulation is now being negotiated stating that all packaging on the EU market needs to be reusable or recyclable in an economically viable manner by 2030. This regulation will also come with requirements for the amount of recycled plastic allowed within the packaging.

The EU budget will also contribute to achieving key climate objectives. There is now something that is called “Own Resources” based on non-recycled plastic packaging waste. That means that member states that are better at collecting and recycling plastic packaging pay a lower fee to the EU. And as I have written about earlier this year, the UK and Spain have introduced taxes to favour recycled plastic.

Increased recycled content in our products

I recently attended the Almedalen Week in Sweden. It is hosted by the Swedish political parties and is considered one of the most important political events of the year. As a result of Trioworld’s high ambitions regarding the circularity of plastics, I was invited to participate on stage at a seminar discussing the future of energy recovery related to plastic waste. The overarching question for the panel was how the value chain can act together to reach the climate goals, which include no energy recovery of fossil-based plastics. I presented Trioworld’s ambition to use 30% post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) in the manufacture of our products by 2025, and 50% by 2030. This could be compared with the average use of PCR in the European plastic industry which is 10%.

What we know will happen in 2030 for companies using flexible plastic packaging in the value chain

Taxes and legislations are accelerating the journey towards a circular economy. We know that by 2030 all packaging needs to be recyclable, and that plastic packaging should have a minimum percentage of recycled content recovered from post-consumer plastic waste. Details in the new regulation on packaging and packaging waste are not yet settled as the legislative procedure is ongoing. Hopefully this legislative act will be adopted at the beginning of next year. We expect that higher recycling rates, increased volumes and improved quality will boost the demand for recycled plastics.

Increase the PCR content and design for recycling to lower emissions and prepare for coming legislation

Trioworld has the products and the know-how to help our customers to increase the amount of recycled material in their packaging and thereby reduce the carbon footprint. Loop is our label for PE film that contains a minimum of 25% post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR). We can also support our customers in finding ways to design packaging for recyclability.
